Did you know that in five countries where service members can be stationed, it is illegal to be gay, punishable by death in some instances?

The repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” has left many gaps in policy that the services are only now beginning to address. Among these are an absence of Status of Forces protections for gay military professionals who are deployed to areas where it is still illegal to “be” gay, a ban on international travel for HIV+ service members, and a ban on transgender service, causing some to resort to illegal hormone replacement therapy on the international black market. In the newest issue of OutServe Magazine, we delve into these issues, highlighting areas that need focus, as well as areas that the services are now beginning to address, such as the Navy’s progress toward lifting of their ban on international travel for HIV+ service members.
