Associate Editor and Photo Editor: Katie Miller (news@outservemag.org) on Twitter @KatieMillerOS

Katie Miller spent the first half of her undergraduate education at the U.S. Military Academy. At West Point, she ranked 8th out of her class of over 1,100 cadets when evaluated on academic performance, physical fitness and military leadership. However, Miller could not square her honor as an aspiring Army Officer with the daily half-truths required from her under “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell.” In 2010, she publicly announced resignation from the academy on MSNBC’s The Rachel Maddow Show and was honorably discharged from the military. Miller immediately joined the founding board of OutServe – the association of actively-serving LGBT servicemembers – and served as a spokesperson in major media interviews, including: The New York Times, MSNBC, CNN, ESPN, NPR and the BBC. She also escorted Lady Gaga to the 2010 MTV Video Music Awards.

A Truman scholar and Point Foundation scholar, Miller graduated in 2012 from Yale University with a B.A. in political science. Miller joined the LGBT Research and Communications team at the Center for American Progress last fall, and she is currently pursuing Marine Corps Officer Candidate School. At 23 years old, she is the youngest board member of a major LGBT organization. She is chair of the board of directors policy committee at OutServe-SLDN. Miller is responsible for the “All Call” and “From the Board” section of OutServe Magazine among other duties as the photo editor.

Associate Editor: Laura Rayburn (news@outservemag.org)

Laura Rayburn is an active duty Coastie currently working in the marine environmental protection field in Hawaii. She got her start as a writer while a student at Mississippi State University, producing a weekly opinion column for the university’s newspaper, The Reflector. After graduating in 2006 with a degree in biology, Rayburn packed up and moved to three different states in three years, hopping from a job at a homeless shelter to one on a fishing boat and another at a research farm during that span of time. In 2007, while working in the Bering Sea, she had her first interactions with the Coast Guard and began entertaining the thought of joining up with the maritime guardians. Two years later, she made her decision, signed on the dotted line, and has not looked back since.

As a Coast guardsman, Rayburn has been assigned to two cutters and one unit ashore while also traveling from coast to coast on deployments and for training. Despite the frequent adjustments in latitude, Rayburn has been writing since she fell in love with it in college. When not protecting the seas or scratching out new ideas with pen and paper, Rayburn enjoys playing soccer, trying new recipes, and ringing cowbells for the Mississippi State Bulldogs during all their sporting endeavors. Rayburn is responsible for the “Families” section of OutServe Magazine among other duties.
